Hola! Remember Me?

That's right everyone! I am back!

Actually I have been back for awhile, but my life just seems so crazy hectic, I haven't been able to sit down and write a proper post. I have been camping with the family and moving since I've gotten back from my two week spree in the DR.

Thanks to all my lovely guest posters! You gals are all amazing. If you haven't seen these amazing posts, I strongly recommend that you scroll down because they all were wonderful. :)

I'm almost all moved into my new place and I can't wait to share pictures!

Until outfit posts/house posts happen, I'm going to share with you some of my favorite photos from the AMAZING time I spent in the Dominican Republic.

P.S. I missed you all! <3

Guest Post: Dearest Lou

Hello readers of Thrifting through Life!

My name is Cecilia Harvard and I blog over at Dearest Lou {dearestlou.com}
Laura is currently doing service in the Dominican Republic and hopefully having the time of her life! She sweetly asked me to write a post for all of you lovely readers. Since Laura and I both have a LOVE for thrifting, I decided I would write a bit about my thrifty modest fashion.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve LOVED dressing differently than other people.
My style is very diverse because I get bored wearing the same combinations over and over again.
Some of my favorite stores to shop at are F21, Urban Outfitters, Plato’s Closet, & THRIFT STORES!
However, every now and then I will splurge and buy something nice to go with my other thrifty pieces.

I hope that some of these outfits may have inspired some new looks for you guys!
Don’t be afraid to try new looks, who knows, you may even start a new trend.

Thank you so much, Laura for having me over!
I hope you all come visit my blog and say hello!

Guest Post Wearing it On My Sleeves

Oh hey. sup.
I know I know I'm not the lovely Laura.
She asked me to come on over and fill in for her (Thanks Laura, I'll have them clothed, fed, bathed and in bed by 9!)

Whenever I see a guest post it's like I've just walked into my house and some random stranger is in my home wearing my bathrobe, using my toothbrush and simultaneously eating all my Nutella.
You want them to leave as soon as possible so your once normal house can get back to unintruded bliss as usual. But don't worry, I promise Laura will be back in no time, but until then you'll just have to get to know this Nutella eating, bathrobe loving girl.

I'm Sarah, from Wearing It On My Sleeves. I like clothes, I'm sarcastic, I'm in love with thrift store shopping and my little pup Indie (and if that is way too broad for you, you can find a bit more out about me here.)

Fashion wasn't always easy for me. I always liked unique clothes and loved getting gussied up but I never really had a nack for finding trends and creating my own unique personal style.

So one day I just decided I would learn, and I've been on a journey to find out how to have great fashion, not break the bank, and still express my own personal style ever since, and it's been a blast!

Feel free to come check out my blog and go on my style journey with me.

Guest Post: Beetle Bailey

Hey everyone! I'm Bailey from Beetlebailey. I'm excited to be here and guest blog as the lovely Laura is over in the Dominican Republic saving the world and such!

Today I'm sharing one of my very favorite summer treats: Strawberry Vanilla Ice-cream Pops. It's perfect for any weather, but tastes just right when the sun is shining down on you, and the smell of grass is in the air. And it's perfectly good for you because it has strawberries in it, right? right. Don't get intimidated by the steps and the amount of dirty dishes. These are worth every bit of the mess.

Makes: 14-16 pops
What you'll need:
-1 lb strawberries hulled and halved
-½ cup sugar
-2 teaspoons lemon juice
-2 pints vanilla ice cream
-Popsicle Sticks
 -Dixie Cups

1\\ Hull and half your Strawberries. Simply, just cut off the tops and cut it them in half.

2\\ Transfer to a bowl and smash the heck out of them with a potato masher or a fork. It looks a little like a strawberry soup when you're finished.

3\\ Pour your strawberry soup into a pan and add your lemon juice and sugar. Simmer on medium heat until it thickens a bit.

4\\ Pour back into bowl and sit in freezer to cool off. This can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes.

5\\ Sit your ice-cream out for about ten minutes to let it soften & then scoop into a large bowl. Now stir it like you've never stirred before! Then store in the fridge until strawberry mixture has cooled. I usually only leave it in for 30-35 minutes.
6\\ After passing your time with boardgames, tumblr, blog surfing, you name it; Take strawberries and ice-cream out.  Smooth the ice-cream out on the bottom of the bowl, and pour the strawberry mixture over it. Gently stir together. Things will get very pink and maybe even a little lumpy. This is okay!

7\\ Spoon mixture into individual Dixie cups and set on a large plate or pan that is easy to place/remove from the freezer. Then get rid of a bunch of frozen foods to fit the plate, ans shove it in there.

8\\ After they've been sitting for 20 minutes or so, pull them out to quickly stick the popsicle sticks in. You can try to do it before, but usually that results in sideways sticks.

Leave them in for a couple hours and rip away the cup to taste the creamy deliciousness.  I may or may not sneak one each morning for breakfast.
Enjoy! xo

Guest Post:Blue Collar Catwalk

5-3-12 1

Hi, guys!  I'm Kyla from Blue Collar Catwalk popping in to keep you company while Laura's away.  What better way to entertain you than with an outfit post comprised of crazy vintage pants, polka dots and one cute puppy!

The minute I saw the blouse, I knew it was meant to go with these pants.  The gold jewelry may have been a bit much, but I love the edgy vibe it added.  When I put it all together that morning, my husband and I had the following conversation:

Me: Is the jewelry too much or is it the perfect touch?

John: No, I think it looks cool.  I thought you were going to ask if the mixed prints were too much.  And then, I realized you didn't care.

Oh, touché.

Guest Post: Someone Like You

Lace Dress, Straw Fedora, Nude Wedges, Tan Satchel: Thrifted.
Lace Halftee: c/o Halftee.
Stone Necklace: Wal-Mart.

Hello sweet readers of Thrifting Through Life!
My name is Lauren, and I'm the bashful gal and blogger behind Someone Like You.
Laura was kind enough to ask me to guest post for her while she's away in the Dominican Republic; that lucky duck! I am so honored to be guest blogging for her while she's away and here's to hoping she has an incredible trip
Getting the chance to travel outside of your country is the most amazing, enlightening experience. I've only been out of the United States one time, and it was seven years ago to adopt my little sister Gracie from China. Having the chance to go to China was like experiencing a world I never knew existed. I learned so much about another culture, and realized that the world is much, much greater than the small town I live in! There are so many people out there who are in need, and going to China really opened my eyes to seeing that.
I'm really hoping to be able to study abroad when I'm in college so that I may be able to experience even more of what this incredible world offers. I don't even know where I would choose first, because every place sounds incredible!

Have you all traveled outside of your home country? If so, how did it open your eyes...?
With much love, Lauren,

Guest Post: Parasols, Please!

Hey guys!  I'm Mel Margaret of Parasols, Please! and one of Laura's close thrifty friends!

I very much love vintage clothing and accessories like Laura, and I am an avid up-cycler of all-things that strike me as could-be fancy.

Two years ago I came up with an idea to make jewelry boxes out of old books.  I had made a hollow book box for my sister the year before, and although it was pretty hard to do, I was up for a challenge when I got the chance to fulfill this dream in my Art of Bookmaking course at Juniata last spring.  I had to glue and saw on the bandsaw for days!  It was worth it though.

There are four books that make a set for these jewelry boxes, however, they each have their own hidden compartments and could easily be separate pieces.  I recently took these pictures with the help of my friend Paul for a portfolio.  Each book is still partial a book because there are loose pages.  This made it a lot harder to make the walls for the drawers, but I really like that they can open as books as well.

Enjoy!

The whole set!

Gone With the Wind - book drawers

Sea Patrol - hidden compartment and tray

The Planter of the Tree - book drawers

Nineteen Stars - book drawer and hidden compartment
