Guest Post: Shades of Monet

Hello darling Thrifting Through Life readers!

My name is Marisa and I run a little ol blog called Shades of Monet.  How very sweet to meet you today!  I'm a mommy of a spitfire two year old little boy named Keane, a vintage loving gal, hat enthusiast, as well as an Etsy shop owner and there's nothing I love more in life than my darling little family and thrifting to my heart's content of course...well, maybe baking cupcakes...but that's a whole other story.

I grew up near Harrisburg, PA - which is right near where Laura lives as well.  What a coincidence! - The blogging world is a silly place like that.  Perhaps I will run into her someday, but for now I recently moved to a teeny and quaint mountainside town that brags the prettiest landscapes I've seen in a while.  I look forward to spending my time this summer on the lake taking in plenty of good books and fresh air...and that's that.  Sometimes I think that simple is simply sweeter.

Thank you darling Laura for asking me to guest post while you are spending time in a far off land. Enjoy every moment of it.  It was very lovely meeting you all here today.   Come on over and say hello if you feel so inclined:)

Happy Mommy's Day!

Happy Mother's Day everyone (especially to all the mothers out there; you do awesome things!)

This is my lovely mom! She is an amazing and wonderful person; I definitely get all my thrifty tips from her. I would not be where I am today without her. She showed me what it means to be a strong and caring woman.

I love you Mommy; thank you so much for always being there. Sorry, that I'm leaving today, but I'll be home before you know it. <3

xoxo,

Laura

P.S. I'm off to the Dominican today! If you absolutely need to contact me for any reason, I have my lovely friend checking my blogging email. If it is important, please put "IMPORTANT" in the heading line, so she knows to open it and answer your question the best that she can.

Salt-N-Pepa's Here!

Hey all! Hope that you are having an awesome weekend!

Today, I'm sharing with you some salt and pepper shakers. These are from my maternal grandpa, whom collected salt and pepper shakers. He had about 4,000 sets! After he passed away when I was in 3rd grade, we were each allowed to pick out a set. Then I had picked out the oyster and pearl set.

As I had shared before, my grandma's house was destroyed in a flood we had in my area, this past fall. Before we sold all the sets, we got to take another set of salt and pepper shakers. I picked these red ones; they are just so cute and they remind of something that should be in a picnic basket.

Hope that everyone has an awesome weekend and I'll see you all in two weeks, as I leave for the Dominican tomorrow! I'll probably post something tiny tomorrow, and then guest posting starts Tuesday!

xoxo,

Laura

P.S. This song is now stuck in my head. Oh dear.

Melmac Monday: School's Out for the Summer!

Happy Melmac Monday everyone! That is right everyone, as of 3 pm today, I am officially done with school for the year. I am done with sophomore year! I am so glad to be done, words can't even begin to describe.

So, to celebrate the end of  a school year, I thought it would be fun to show some wonderful Melmac cafeteria trays. Even if you aren't in school anymore, these would be so fun for a picnic lunch or a lazy Sunday brunch: just don't forget the half pint of chocolate milk.  : )

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

¡Hola todos! ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Spanish is a pretty important part of my life. Even though I can sometimes get frustrated, I love the language. I love different Hispanic cultures and I am so lucky that I have the chance to travel to different places.

Even though I haven't made it to Mexico yet, (where Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated) I wore my Guatemalan huipil that I got last summer, for a little festivity!

Huipil - Guatemala
Cami - Wal*Mart
Jeans - Kohl's
Shoes - Payless
Headband and Ring - Guatemala
Belt - From a relative's grandmother's estate

Also,  I recently did some photo edits of my favorite pictures from the countries that I have traveled to.

This is in a graveyard in Xela, Guatemala. I love how different the graveyards are from here; they are really bright and lovely places, compared to the gloomy and gray ones we have here.

This lovely photo is from Costa Rica, the trip I went on in high school. This was right down from one of our hotels and it just makes miss the Pura Vida lifestyle.

Stayed tuned, as I leave for the Dominican Republic for a mission trip, next Sunday!

¡Tienen una día buena!

Museums and Interactions with the Future Generation

Hey everyone! Its almost the weekend - thank goodness. It is final's week here at college, and I'm so ready for it to be over. My first final is tomorrow at 8 am aka the worst time ever to take a test. I'm done on Monday, but I'm going to be on campus until Wednesday, so I'm excited just to relax. I can't believe that I'm halfway through my college career; it doesn't seem real to me yet.

Also , I did want to tell you two funny encounters I had the other day, both of which involving little kids.
1.) Sometimes I baby-sit my boss' daughter, who is about 8. She is such a great kid, really full of energy. While we at the playground the other day, she was telling me about this doll she had with her; it was a fashion doll, but it was supposed to be a monster. I have never seen anything like this before and I was torn whether it was creepy or cool (the verdict is still out on that). Her doll was a vampire and is able to hang upside, just like a bat would do. She had it hanging from the monkey bars and I said, "Don't let her hang upside down too long or all the blood will go to her head" - the same thing my mother would say to me when I would hang upside down when I was little. Anyway, my boss' daughter goes, "Laaauura, don't be silly. She doesn't have any blood; she drinks everyone else's blood!"

By the way, these dolls are called Monster High and the vampire doll is called Draculaura! I about peed my pants when I saw that. I may or may not have a picture of Draculaura as my Facebook cover photo right now. And by that, I mean I definitely do.

2.) I'm walking out of the cafe where I usually study and these two little boys are holding the doors. I thanked them and they said "Two dollars please or you cannot get through!" I told them, "I don't have two dollars." (A total lie, but hey, when you are in college two dollars can get you far). But, I looked in my bag and I offered them a mint or a little key chain flashlight. They wanted the flashlight, so I handed it to them and then continued back to my dorm. I got halfway down the stairs when I realized that the flashlight I gave them was from PCAR, which stands for Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape. I had gotten it from the domestic abuse and sexual assault shelter that I volunteer at.

I really hope they can't read yet.

Hope you enjoyed the lovely pictures Miss Amy and I took at the campus museum!

If anyone else is going through finals right now, keep your head up!

xoxo,

Laura
